Section: AI Start
OPENING
AI appears increasingly in everyday work.
A colleague has a report summarised.
An adviser uses AI to explore ideas.
An employee asks AI for a first draft.
It feels useful.
And often it starts small: simply giving it a try.
But after a while, another question emerges.
How do you actually use AI well in your work?
Not only quickly or efficiently, but consciously and responsibly too.
This question touches on something increasingly important:
AI literacy.
SEE
AI literacy concerns more than technology.
Above all, it concerns how people work with technology.
AI can help with thinking, writing and analysis.
But the system does not determine how it is used. Professionals do.
That is why AI literacy starts with insight and behaviour, rather than technical detail.
At De Talentengids, we use a simple model:
See · Do · Own.
It helps us examine AI use in three ways.
AI Start — See
The first step is understanding what AI actually is.
Many people experience AI as an answer machine.
But AI works differently. The system generates text and ideas based on patterns in data.
This makes AI surprisingly helpful at times.
But it can also sound convincing without being entirely correct.
AI literacy therefore starts with looking more closely at what AI does.
AI Practice — Do
The second step is experience.
AI can support professionals with many everyday tasks, such as:
- summarising information
- developing ideas
- writing first drafts
- structuring complex subjects
By working with it, you discover what AI can add to your work.
As a tool for thinking and making, rather than a replacement for expertise.
Safe & Responsible AI — Own
The third step concerns responsibility.
AI can provide considerable support, but does not take over responsibility.
Professionals remain responsible for:
- the quality of information
- the choices made
- handling data carefully
This is one reason attention to responsible AI use is growing, including in European regulation such as the AI Act.
But ultimately, responsible use starts with more than rules.
It starts with conscious behaviour.
DO
Getting started with AI need not be complicated.
A few simple steps help.
Start by exploring
Use AI to develop ideas, summarise texts or structure a subject.
Work step by step
See AI as a tool supporting your work, rather than a system taking it over.
Keep thinking for yourself
Check important information and use your own expertise to assess AI outcomes.
This keeps AI a tool that strengthens your work.
OWN
Technology changes quickly.
But ultimately, the most important question is about more than what technology can do.
The most important question is:
How we use it.
AI literacy therefore calls for an attitude:
- stay curious
- stay critical
- take responsibility
Behaviour makes the difference between arbitrary use and conscious AI use.
BRIEF SUMMARY
• AI literacy concerns behaviour as well as technology.
• Good AI use starts with See, Do and Own.
• Professionals remain responsible for how AI is used in their work.
REFLECTION QUESTION
Where in your work could AI help — while you keep thinking for yourself?
CLOSING
At De Talentengids, we explore AI literacy through See · Do · Own.
In the coming articles, we examine:
- what AI actually does
- how to use AI practically
- how to use AI consciously and responsibly at work
For organisations, this can also be the start of a broader exploration.
An AI scan based on See · Do · Own reveals where an organisation stands in its use of AI and which steps help it apply AI consciously and responsibly.
If you would like to know more, I would be happy to talk.
