Present — #07 | In a conversation

Today I chose:
space · think ahead · light

Every day, I work with three words.
One to see.
One to do.
One to own.

Together, they form my Present set for today.

Late afternoon.
Two glasses on the table.

He says something that stays with me.
About how I handled something.

I respond immediately.
Too quickly.

I hear myself talking as I speak.
Explaining.
Setting things straight.

My face grows red.
My voice a little sharper than intended.

He says nothing back.

There is the moment.

SEE — space

The table grows quiet.

I look at my glass.
See my hand around it.

Between what he said and what I just did, there is space.

I had not taken it.

DO — think ahead

I stop talking.

“Wait a moment,” I say.

I ask a question.
What exactly did you mean?

He answers more calmly than I expected.

OWN — light

It does not need setting straight.

Not everything said needs smoothing over.

I let it stand.

Lean back a little.

That was enough.

Reflection question: When do you notice you are already talking when you had actually wanted to keep listening?
