See.Do.Own — #8 | A child asks you something while you work

Today I chose:
recognise · choose · connect

Every day, I work with three words.
One to see.
One to do.
One to own.
Together, they form my See.Do.Own set for today.

I am at my laptop at the kitchen table.
The screen glows brightly. Sentences still unfinished.

“Dad, look.”

My daughter stands beside me.
I see her.
But not really.

My eyes stay on the screen.
Tension creeps into my shoulders.
My mouth becomes still and tight.

She waits.
Says it again.

There is the moment.

SEE — recognise

I notice how quickly I want to stay seated.
As though this must come first.

My gaze will not let go.
But my body is already moving slightly away.

There is the tension.
And what I otherwise fail to see.

DO — choose

My hands stop typing.

I turn my chair.
Lean a little towards her.

“Show me.”

OWN — connect

Not halfway.
Not squeezed in between.

Here for a moment.
With her.

Things grow quieter.
Inside me. Between us.

The moment opens.
Small. Enough.

As though I have shifted position for a moment.

I chose differently. That was enough.
